British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The facility, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores British leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel deployed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our security, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says Daesh still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
