European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States
The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
