The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.

This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a demonstration that could "allow for a potential flight.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, Justice Moraes said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.

His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
